Towards carbon neutrality: the challenges of sustainable logistics automation.

At the end of July 2021, the European Union passed the climate law which "establishes the binding objective of climate neutrality" for member countries, establishing a series of guidelines for the global reduction of emissions by 2050.

Climate neutrality means achieving a balance between emissions and absorbtions of greenhouse gases throughout the EU, with an interim target of 55% reduction in CO² emissions by 2030.

How are the themes of climate neutrality and sustainability applied in the field of supply chain and logistics?

Green procurement logistic solutions. can be translated, for example, into the use of recycled materials, raw materials from sustainable productions or production processes from renewable energy sources.

The increase in energy and raw material costs, following the critical global socio-political panorama, has led companies, both Italian and foreign, to pay ever greater attention to the fight against waste and the optimization of industrial processes.

However, companies that really want to embrace the issue of sustainability within their corporate values cannot limit themselves to tackling it in purely economic terms.

Sustainability must become an integral part of the corporate mission influencing its entire processes: from procurement, to production, up to logistics.

The modern consumer, in fact, is increasingly sensitive to issues of social responsibility and, consequently, more aware in the choice of products to buy, not only on the basis of their content, but also on the basis of their origin, packaging and many other factors with social and environmental impact.

According to a study promoted by the Observatory for Social Cohesion and Inclusion (OCIS), which compares data from 2002 and 2018, there has been a considerable increase in the number of Italian citizens who claim to have made responsible consumption choices (since 28.4% in 2002 to 63.4% in 2018), focusing on the relationship between Italians and sustainability

Industrial and logistics automation can also play a fundamental role in optimizing processes, becoming an integral part of strategies corporate di sostenibilità ambientale.

For thirty years, ERREVI has been designing and manufacturing innovative industrial automation solutions aimed at transforming the potential of its partners into high performance, maximum efficiency and service to the market, concepts that increasingly combine business objectives with logistic solutions. From this approach comes the proprietary methodology of ERREVI called "Low Risk Automation", which allows to reduce interferences from design to implementation and after-sales.

AGV shuttlesAutomated Guided Vehicle) "Navilog" model, for example, designed and totally manufactured internally by ERREVI, were created to optimize various processes of goods handling with the adoption of some expedients dictated by principles of social and environmental responsibility.

First of all, Navilog AGVs have an induction power supply. Inside logistics or production centres, the installation of shuttle 100% powered by an inductive system, it offers a double advantage for customers: on the one hand, there are no problems of environmental pollution or battery disposal; on the other, the use of clean electricity, for example deriving from photovoltaic systems, can turn into a competitive advantage for the company.

Another important aspect in terms of liability is represented by the fact that the Navilog AGVs can work in the presence of operators in total safety. Being equipped with advanced co-botic navigation control systems, man-machine interaction has zero impact from the point of view of operator safety and health risks.

In general, for all its advanced automation solutions, ERREVI designs the management and control software components internally, combining principles of operational efficiency with high standards of safety and energy efficiency.

An applied example of the adoption of these principles is represented by the Exotec Skypod system of which ERREVI is the exclusive partner for the Italian market. The system was born as a revolutionary GTP (Goods to Person) solution suitable for holistically combining the omnichannel needs of modern retail, where B2B and B2C, physical and virtual processes are combined in an organic strategy of service to the consumer. Thanks to its operational efficiency based on machine learning principles, the Skypod is able to guarantee higher outputs than logistics processes and consequently reduce externalities related to energy consumption.
